Unbeknown to some and craved by others, Romelu Lukaku will soon be exploding onto the highest levels of European football. The 17-year old Belgian born striker has been a revelation at Anderlecht for many seasons and his talent has drawn the attention of the biggest and best clubs across Europe. With a price tag upwards of £20m, it is not hard to realise how sought after his signature is. I am drawing special attention to this young player because I believe he will evolve into a global star. Why so?
Between the years of 2004 to 2006, Lukaku played youth football for Belgian side Lierse and scored a phenomenal 121 goals in 68 games. When Lierse were relegated, Anderlecht snapped up Lukaku and he continued his unbelievable scoring record by netting 131 goals in 93 appearances. Now that he is an established professional at Anderlecht, he has managed to net 39 times in 87 appearances and won the Belgian Golden Boot in 2009 with 19 goals. Lukaku has also broken into the Belgian first team and scored twice in a friendly against Russia to start his international career.
With Lukaku hotly tipped to go to the Premier League this season, it looks like it could be Chelsea or Manchester City that secure the talent of this wonderkid and I don’t think it would take him any time at all to settle in the English game. His physique and touch have drawn comparisons with Didier Drogba and a picture of Lukaku in a Chelsea shirt in their conference room has heightened speculation that he could go to Stamford Bridge this summer. All I know is that whoever manages to get Lukaku to put pen to paper this year will be signing one of the best young talents tha global football has to offer.
