Alexander Büttner has signed a five-year deal with Manchester United, according to Dutch paper Omroep Gelderland. Nothing has officially come out of the club as of yet but it is only a matter of time with pictures of him holding a United shirt all but confirming the deal.
It is about time United had some competition in the left back slot. Evra’s performance last night was typical of how he has played over the past 18 months. The Frenchman has become far too comfortable in his guaranteed starting spot and his lazy approach has become one of United’s weakest links. The lightning quick Büttner will be breathing down his neck and at a reported €5 million, it is a sound investment to try and build some depth into our defence.
Speaking about the move, Büttner said:
“If you had told me one week ago that I would be training with and playing for the same team as Robin van Persie, I would have sent you to a mental home.
“This is crazy stuff, beyond all my dreams. I am looking forward to this challenge so much. I am so proud and so glad that it has worked out like this.
“I’m so glad that it has happened and everything has turned out like this. This is really a dream come true.”
He will be an understudy to Evra but that is what we needed. We did not need a left back who would come straight in as a starter at United but merely someone to make Evra realise that he has to fight for his place.
Sir Alex Ferguson on Büttner: “Alexander is one of the best young left backs in Europe and we’re delighted to sign him. He’s someone we’ve been watching for a while now. He gives us some really exciting options in that position.”
Alexander Büttner on Manchester United: “Joining Manchester United is one of the best days of my life. It’s a team I have admired for many years now and I can’t wait to join my teammates and play my part in helping the club be successful.”
