Welbeck: Playing for United is all I have ever wanted to do

by Sam Peoples

Danny Welbeck has signed a new four-year deal at United that will see him stay at Old Trafford until at least June 2016. The Manchester born striker thoroughly deserves the new deal after an impressive debut season with the first team last year and a better than most performance at Euro 2012.

A fans favourite already for his Berba-esque touch and never say die attitude, it is fantastic to get him penned down on a long term  deal. Considering we have just signed Robin van Persie in the same position, it is a real show of faith in the quality of his ability by Sir Alex.

Speaking to manutd.com, Danny said:

“Playing for United is all I’ve ever wanted to do.” Danny Welbeck

“Playing for United is all I’ve ever wanted to do. It’s the club I’ve supported all my life.

“I can’t wait for the challenge of the new season to play my part in helping the team compete for trophies.

“I’m learning all the time from the best manager in the game and I’m keen for that to continue alongside the world class players in the squad.”

Sir Alex saw the fruits of Welbeck and Rooney last season as their fantastic link up play was one of the highlights of the campaign. They struck a Yorke and Cole-esque partnership that was almost telepathic at times and the future bodes well for both strikers. Sir Alex added a few words about the new long term deal. He said:

“This year is another important one for him. He has a bright future ahead of him.” Sir Alex Ferguson

“Danny has been with the club since he was eight years old and has made fantastic progress in the last couple of years – first out on loan and last year as a regular in the first team.

“He has become an important player at international level as well, as the maturity of his performances at the European Championships showed.

He is ‘a’ good player, but he has to learn from RVP and wayne, He delays ‘the’ ball most times, he should learn how to shoot fast like demba and cisse. That means he should see more of ‘the’ bench this season
