Speaking at his press match press conference this morning, Sir Alex has confirmed that Manchester United’s defensive options look to be given a boost on Sunday with Northern Irish international Jonny Evans in contention to start:
He said: “Centre-back is our main concern at the moment. Jonny Evans played [for the Under-21s] on Wednesday and came through fine. He’s the strongest option we’ve got.
“Phil Jones has done some training but isn’t ready yet. Rio’s in the same boat. At least we have one more centre-back available, which is an improvement. It allows us to put Carrick back in midfield.”
Our defence has struggled with the start of this season. Vidic is not match fit yet and makeshift centre Carrick found himself exposed a lot of the time. A return to the line-up for Evans would be a massive boost for us as he was our best defender last season.
With Evans back in the heart of defence alongside Vidic, we may well see the first appearance of Michael Carrick in his favoured midfield position. United are desperate to have our main midfielder back in his natural spot in the middle as we have been simply overrun in the games against Everton and Fulham.
I hope to see Carrick partner Cleverley on Sunday away at Southampton as I feel it is the best partnership we have in our squad but it has not had the chance to blossom yet.
