I can’t believe anyone would say Valencia is overrated, if anything, he deserves more recognition for the job he does at United. He never complains to the press about not being on the starting eleven or playing at RB like most players would. He doesn’t make ludicrous contract demands like most other players. The purpose of a winger is to run to the by-line and cross which is exactly what he does. All this rubbish about wingers having to cut in is absolute tosh not to mention that would usually be a winger in a 433 not a 442 or 4411. Examples or overrated wingers are Walcott and Downing.
Valencia was very lucky on Sunday. Instead of a simple pass to unmarked Giggs at back post for a tap in, he went for glory himself and could have easily made a mess of it, but for stupid Johnson.
While he is a good winger, he is no Beckham or Ronaldo. He still has to find a good form his season. I will always remember his miss at Blackburn during his first season with us. He was one on one with their keeper and failed to score. The match finished 0:0, and we lost the title to the rent boys by a point.
Leon the bitter you’ve made my day ! Honestly ! I have been claiming that Valencia is probably the most overrated United player for ages on MEN United page but noone has so far responded against my judgement. You are luckier as you’ve had a few insults already on this page. Before anybody calls me a bitter or a dipper let me tell you that I’m over 60 years old and have supported United since 1960 !! Let’s talk about his qualities first: He’s fast, very fast, strong, very difficult to take the ball off him, has a great shot and defends well. Does this make him a good winger ? Definitely no and I will explain why. The best way to go about this is to compare him with some recognised wingers.
1. A good winger is supposed to make accurate crosses to the advantage of his partners in the box. If we consider D. Beckham as the reference crosser with a 10 on 10 how would you sincerely rate Valencia ? 4 on 10 !! All his crosses whether low or high are just pumped in HOPEFULLY !!
2. A good winger should take his defender on down the line or run towards goal to make an assist or score. If we give G. Bale 10 on 10 for this exercise, how much would you rate Valencia ? 4 out 10 again ? One reader asked Leon to name one defender who Valencia could not go past. I could name a few but I will refer him back to the CL final at Wembley where Valencia was neutralised like a small kid by an over thirty player, namely, Eric Abidal.
3. A winger is supposed to dribble his way along the corner line and look to make a killer pass to an oncoming partner in the back of retreating defenders like Spurs did against Reading for their first two goals the weekend before ( scored by Defoe and Bale ). Evra and Rafael find themselves more often in that position than Valencia. The ONLY time I have seen Valencia do this was against Swansea at Old Trafford last season when he rolled the ball back to Carrick leading to Scholes opener and to Nani who fluffed his shot. God knows why he does not even try to do it more often !
4. Unlike most wingers who will preferentially go on the outside of their opponent to open up the opposing defense, Valencia prefers to cut inside although he has a completely useless left foot. He therefore plays a lateral or back pass with his right foot. For all the criticism that Nani has deservedly received lately, at least when he cuts inside whether from the right or left wing he has the capacity to shoot with either foot.
Do you guys still believe Valencia is not overrated? Don’t just waive my criticisms with the back of your hand. I would like you to prove to me otherwise like I’ve done above. His number of assists is not a real indication because these come from hopeful crosses or drives across the box. An intelligent winger would have had twice the number of assists. He is so approximate as a crosser that to date no one knows for sure whether his great goal against Blackburn at Old Trafford last season was a real shot or meant to be a hard low cross !! That says it all !!
It always amazed me when pple criticize man united.let me tell u this,had it been he was hit by agger attempt that got him himself injured(agger) want would have happened to valencia.remember he escaped from the attempts of two liverpool players,after which johnson fouled him again,three fouls attempt on a single player.
Yes , you are correct ,Valencia was fouled in the midfield as well , but somehow he managed to stay on his feet. Perhaps because they don’t award penalties for fouls outside the box. I naver mentioned Man U as a club, so keep your nickers on. I’m speaking out against diving no matter who is doing it ; Bale, Suarez or Valencia. It brings the game into disrepute.

I once ran 10metres segment in 0.93 secs (Okay not a standing start but using this logic I can easily run 100metres in 9.3 secs. Remember they used to do 100m sprints before the League Cup final (Prior to Coca Cola Cup) Danny Wallace won it once i think.
