U21s Ratings – Manchester United 3-3 Southampton

by Sam Peoples

Gollini 6 – Made his U21 debut tonight. Was kept on his toes when Southampton got back into the game in the first half. Made a few smart saves and had to be alert. Could of had a stronger hand for the Curtis equaliser at the end of the game – real shame.

Wootton 6 – Played at right back tonight and I think he is better used as a centre back. Both of Southampton’s goals came through crosses on our right hand side.

M.Keane 6 – Keane really reminds me of a young Ferdinand in his playing style. Looked assured tonight once again and comfortable playing the ball out of the box.

Fornasier 6 – Similar performance to his centre back partner Keane. All of defence at fault for conceding two headers from crosses really.

Blackett 5 – Not the best performance from Tyler. Although he started brightly in the first half at the back, he didn’t take it into the second. Southampton got on top of United and two crosses over to the back stick gave Southampton the lead. Beaten in the jump for the first goal but there was a hint of a foul.

Bebe 4 – A return to the team for Bebe and the first half brought much of the same – good pace but little end product. Potentially smashed a window with a shot from 30 yards toward the end of the first half that went far out of the stadium. Poor game from him and didn’t really do anything to change my thinking towards his first team chances.

Thorpe 6 – Played in a defensive mid role tonight. Not his normal position but didn’t have a bad performance. Was committed in the tackle and played the short ball out to his midfield partners to get moves going. Didn’t under achieve, just kept the game ticking.

Cole 7 – Another impressive performance from Cole. Scored United’s equaliser in the 70th minute after a lovely 1-2 with Lingard. Involved in a lot of the good football that we played on the night with great interlink play among the team.

Tunnicliffe 8 – I really enjoy watching Tunnicliffe play. Run, tackle, pass, shoot – he is a no nonsense midfielder and, as cliché as it is, he’s the closest to Roy Keane that United have on the books. Moment of the match was his box to box run and inch perfect pass that Bebe couldn’t convert.

Lingard 7 – An early deflected goal from Lingard gave United the perfect start. Had a blistering left foot effort saved by Boruc late in the first half. Bagged an assist as well with a perfectly timed 1-2 with Cole.

King 8 – Good play from King straight from the off to tease and turn before setting up Lingard for the opening goal. His electric pace always brought him space and kept his head up looking for options, great decision making. Fantastic play right at the death teeing up Veseli for a volley at the back post to win the game.

McGinty 6 – Came on in the 67th minute for Tyler Blackett and slipped into left back to give United more height. Didn’t do anything wrong but with United attacking, didn’t get in the game much.

Veseli 7 – Came on for the last 15 minutes after replacing Bebe on the right midfield. An unfamiliar position for him.

James N/A – Came on for the last two minutes to waste some time.
