Sir Alex Ferguson confirms team news ahead of SC Braga match

by Sam Peoples

Speaking at the pre match press conference alongside Rafael ahead of SC Braga’s visit to Old Trafford tomorrow, Sir Alex Ferguson has confirmed the latest team news.

Sir Alex said: “I’m not playing Rio. I’m making a few changes. I’m leaving out Rio and Patrice Evra. We have a big game against Chelsea [to think about on Sunday].

“We’ve got Ashley Young back and he’ll be involved tomorrow. We’ve got Nani, Valencia, Giggs… plenty of wide players. I have an issue in terms of picking the team. Hopefully I get it right.”

With Rio Ferdinand being rested, it points towards one of twothings. Either Michael Carrick will play centre back or Scott Wootton is in line to make his full Champions League debut.

Patrice Evra will also be rested ahead of the Chelsea game on Sunday so new boy Alexander Buttner will get his first European start tomorrow evening against Braga.

Sir Alex also confirmed that Ashley Young will be in line to make his comeback from injury but that Chris Smalling and Phil Jones are not yet ready for first team football.

He said: Chris Smalling trained this morning with Warren Joyce’s team. He’s trained with them for a couple of days. It’s non-contact for him at the moment. The encouraging thing is that he’s getting closer.

“I expect Phil Jones to start on the football side of things next Monday as well. They’re both two or three weeks away, which is good news. They’re not far away.”

The boss also spoke about the reported bust-up between himself and Rio Ferdinand following his decision not to wear the Kick It Out T-shirt in the warm up against Stoke.

He said:  “The issue’s simple. I’ve spoken to Rio. It was a communication issue. He felt I should have spoken to him on Friday and I didn’t anticipate that he’d have a problem wearing the shirt. My advice is to him is that I always feel a union is stronger than an individual. It’s important he airs his greivances to the right people, the FA.

“It’s been a communication issue more than anything else. We’ve resolved the situation, there’s no lingering problems and we move on. That’s the end of the matter.”

A 4-5-1 formation would be my suggestion! The diamond is really working well and closing out teams while drawing attacks to the flanks where it’s easier to deal with! For today’s formaton, the diamond midfield would go again but with a twist- a creative midfielder in the CM, say Scholes! A diamond of Flectcher at base, Kagawa-Left and Tom Cleverley-Right, Rooney at the front! Then Scholes can play in the central position.

Upfront in attack would be Chicharito! Give RVP a rest for the big win on Sunday! Then the shape can change later on with length brought in by introducing Nani, Valencia and Young with Rooney being replaced by Young! Or Anderson coming on for Scholes, still with introduction of wide players! Don’t see the necessity of playing much with the backline, A solid combination of Lindegaard, Rafael, Wootton, Evans, Buttner should suffice! I prefer a natural defender replacing Rio rather than anyone else because they best understand the importance of defending first and other things later! So my starting formation would be:

Lindegaard

Rafael Wootton Evans Buttner

Fletcher

Cleverley Scholes Kagawa

Rooney

Chicharito

nice move fergie. Those two goofies sure need to be 100% fit against Chelsea’s 3 assassins, other than that i see Man utd defence torn to shreds. (we know who we are, the european champions. KTBFFH)

For young its good to start, Rio is not a good player any more is getting old. also evra is getting old, lets continue to use our young players like buttner. For welbeck its not good again. My concern is that SUNDAY match, we need to win it.

Please sell rio and buy one more defensive option,we need another central midfielder that knows how to hold onto the ball and make passes…and another left winger…..this will make united a better team.

I think man utd will win the match 3-0 because of their good midfield players (1) the partnership of anderson and cleverley (2) kagawa will play with them (3) fletcher in defensive position to support (4) buttner- the young quick defender (5) in a diamond system. In this match i bet cleverley, anderson and kagawa will play plenty of 1-2 passes

Just don’t renew Rio’s contract come summer or sell the lousy defender in January to get some money. Time to give the younger guys a chance to take over like Wotton, jones and smalling, also to ensure that descipline is maintained within the team.
