Mexican Olympic star edges closer to Old Trafford move

by Sam Peoples

Hector Herrera has come a step closer to a dream move to Manchester United after Pachuca’s president Jésus Martinez claimed along with Porto that there are offers from Manchester United and PSG, both of whom have confirmed their interest in the 22 year old.

Speaking on the move of Herrera from Liga MX minnows CF Pachuca, Martinez said: “Porto are not the only side in the race. There is also a club from England and another one in France. We plan to sell Herrera in the summer of 2013.”

Nicknamed ‘Zorro’, Herrera shone for Mexico in the London 2012 Olympics in which El Tricolor won the gold medal. Prior to the games, Mexico won the Toulon Tournament, an international U21s competition in which Herrera was named Player of the Tournament. Previous winners of the Meilleur joueur include Juan Riquelme, Alan Shearer and Thierry Henry. Not bad company.

Valued at £7 million, Herrera has been described by his manager Gabriel Caballero as a box-to-box midfielder who is equally adept at halting advances from opposing players as he is creating opportunities by distributing the ball or shooting on goal.

As a player Herrera has been compared to former Manchester United captain and cult hero Roy Keane as well as Chelsea’s Brazilian star Ramires.

After the deal was halted in the summer because of a knee injury, Pachuca’s president’s comments have made it evident that Sir Alex Ferguson is not going to let the latest South American wonderkid slip away easily.
