Lucas Moura reveals reasons behind turning down Manchester United and joining PSG

by Tom Parker

Former Manchester United target Lucas Moura has today revealed the reasons why he rejected the chance to join United and chose Paris Saint Germain instead.

This comes after the 20-year-old Brazilian completed his move to Qatari owned PSG for a club record fee of €45 million from Sao Paulo.

Speaking to Telefoot TF1, he said: “Manchester United wanted me but I talked a lot with Leonardo and he convinced me.”

United came very close to signing the promising youngster in the transfer window, with Sir Alex Ferguson admitting United “were interested” in bringing Lucas to Old Trafford.

After being outgunned by PSG, Sir Alex stated that football had “gone mad” after PSG reportedly paid well over €40 million for the player.

“I find it quite amazing that a club can pay 45 million euros for a 19-year-old boy,” he said.

The blow of losing out on Moura was significantly softened by the purchases of both Robin van Persie and Shinji Kagawa, who is a similar player to the Brazilian.

However, Ferguson was very keen on the Brazilian who can play as an attacking midfielder or winger and the Scotsman even stayed in Manchester (where Lucas was playing during the Olympics), while United played a pre-season friendly in Norway, in a bid to capture the talented youngster.

Lucas follows in the footsteps of former world player of the year Ronaldinho who also spent time in the French capital. Having made a substitute appearance in a friendly, the 20-year-old is likely to make his debut in the Coupe De La Ligue clash with Arras.

It will be interesting to see how he fares in European football as he has the weight of a hefty price tag on his shoulders. It will be particularly intriguing as a number of Brazilian footballers have recently headed back to their homeland, with Alexandre Pato joining Corinthians and Robinho looking set to join Gremio.

Whether United have missed out on another world beater remains to be seen. However, at such an inflated price, missing out on Lucas could prove to be a blessing in disguise especially after the success of summer signing Robin van Persie who would have likely not been signed had United landed Moura.

[…] Moura claimed that Leonardo’s presence was the big draw for him which is why he snubbed a move to Old Trafford but I’m sure the money sweetened the deal. However, things haven’t been all plain sailing for Moura in France as when he wasn’t in the side, he was dropped from the Brazil squad and was unsettled at the club. […]

Lucas’ case is no different to Hazard these are young players and you really cant blame the reasoning of a 20 year old they make irrational decisions…..and being talented it goes without any question but the thing is a fish in a pond will not be a shark in a sea..Wayne was already tried and tested..Besides he was worthy it

We did pay £35 million for an already proven Premier League youngster who has gone on to be one of the most complete players in the world – not a youngster who has been tearing up the Brazilian league.
