United in for Frank Lampard

Sir Alex Ferguson is once again interested in bringing Frank Lampard to Old Trafford next summer when his contract at Chelsea ends.

It has already been confirmed that officials from the Manchester United camp have contacted Lampard and his representatives about a possible free move to Old Trafford.

Ferguson has been a long-term admirer of Lampard and even tried a cut-price deal for the England international last summer but his offer was quickly rebuffed by Chelsea chiefs. Ferguson was also a massive fan of Lampard when he tried to hijack his £11 million move to Chelsea in 2001 and the opportunity to sign him on a free would certainly be appealing.

Chelsea have been reluctant to offer any new deal, despite reports of Lampard willing to more than half his wages in order to extend his Chelsea career. Lampard’s agent Steve Kutner also explained how Chelsea would not be offering Lampard a new contract ‘under any circumstances’.

Although Lampard had expressed his desire to stay, a move to Manchester United would be far from a step down and the 34-year-old could very much feature at United. Ferguson has no qualms playing the experienced head, as has been seen with Scholes and Giggs and with Scholes expected to retire at the end of the season, Lampard could provide established cover in midfield.

Given his goalscoring record and Premier League experience, you could certainly make a worse signing than Lampard.

Do you think Lampard would be a good signing?
