Nani in Portugal visiting old club Sporting Lisbon this week

by Sam Peoples

Nani paid a visit to his former employers Sporting Lisbon in Portugal this week as he is still sidelined with injury.

He has been out of first team action with a hamstring injury since November and Sir Alex Ferguson confirmed that it was unlikely he would return before mid January.

Whilst a visit to his previous employers Sporting Lisbon to visit their academy is harmless and actually a rather nice gesture to keep in touch with his roots, it won’t do anything to dampen the rumours that he could potentially be leaving Manchester United.

“We need a Nani. He offers something different from the other players. He’s an incredible talent, the boy’s a great talent.” Sir Alex Ferguson

United cannot afford to let Nani go, it is as simple as that. Every team needs individuals – those archetypal players who take it upon themselves to try and carve something out of nothing. Nobody else in our current squad is like Nani and he is an entirely different attacking dimension that we would lose if he was sold.

Hate him or love him, you would rather be angry with a player for trying and failing than not trying at all. Take Valencia this season in comparison – he has lost all confidence in his own ability and more often than not simply passes the ball backwards rather than at least trying to skip past his man.

In his absence and Valencia’s misfiring form, United have struggled to create natural width. Our traditional wide play has not been as fruitful as it has been and we are really missing having Nani as an option.

Coming into a busy period couple of months that will see us face Real Madrid in the knock-out stages of the UEFA Champions League, the return of Nani will be a massive boost to the squad. It will give us that added dimension and combined with the red hot van Persie and Hernandez, as well as a returning Rooney and Kagawa, our attack could become even more potent.

Why do we forget too soon? Is this not the lad (Nan) who gave us all we needed last season? Should he be crucified this season simply or because his form depressed? Nani still got credible talent in him. I even and I preferred him in that wing to Ashly Young and Antonio Valencia. His speed and skills is undisputed. Nani we soon regain his fitness and contribute his part to the squad. All he need is our prayer for his fast recovery.
