PICTURE: United fans send De Gea a strong message of support

by Tom Parker

It is difficult to recall a player who has received as much undue criticism as Manchester United’s young goalkeeper David De Gea. It seems the Spaniards card was marked since a mistake in the Community Shield at the start of last season. Those in the media seemed to take gratification from any error that De Gea made, and simply ignored some fantastic performances from De Gea.

If it wasn’t Gary Neville ridiculously over-analysing Nemanja Vidic’s reaction to Tottenham Hotspur’s equaliser, then it was the tabloids peddling absolute hokum about Sir Alex Ferguson scouting round for possible replacements between the sticks.

Because of this, De Gea is constantly under-scrutiny so it was good to see United fans show their support for the talented stopper. The banner was unfurled during this evenings match against Fulham at Craven Cottage, with the banner featuring the words “In David we trust.”

It is certainly good to see that the away fans were firmly behind De Gea, who was in impressive form against Fulham as some fans did get on the keepers back during the tense 2-1 victory against Southampton in mid-week.

When thinking about De Gea, perspective is the key thing to maintain. Comparing the 22-year-old to former United greats Peter Schmeichel and Edwin Van Der Sar is fair enough but it is important to remember that at 22.

At the same age, Van Der Sar was just breaking into the Ajax first team and Schmeichel was plying his trade at Hvidorve, while De Gea is already established as United’s number one and has appeared in a European final for his previous club.

Clearly, De Gea is at least five years off of his prime and still has 15 years plus left at the top-level. Sir Alex Ferguson always sticks by his players – think Ronaldo in his prima donna years. He took a punt on the young Spaniard and many firmly believe he will be the best around in years to come. It is important that both the club and the fans stick with De Gea or they could live to regret it in the future.

To see such a public show of support to De Gea, is a firm and unblinking statement that the fans are behind the Spaniard, who was fantastic yet again, today, despite repeated changes to the back four. Excellente, Dave.
