Nick Powell made his first appearance for Manchester United at any level tonight for the first time this year in the U21s 2-2 draw with Arsenal at Moss Lane.
The 18-year-old midfielder had been sidelined with an injury but didn’t show any signs of it tonight in a very good personal performance.
Every time Powell plays at U21s level, he looks a cut above the competition and tonight was no different. His movement and smart finish for the goal was great as was his play in the build-up to Jesse Lingard‘s goal was fantastic, showing great strength and awareness to hold up the play before laying a tidy ball to Januzaj.
He played the full 90 minutes and even on a heavy pitch where passing was difficult, he calmly stroked the ball around and kept the game ticking. He doesn’t carry the persona of a player who only 12 months away was playing in League Two with Crewe Alexandra. Now he has played at Old Trafford in front of over 75,000 and away to Galatasaray in a hellish atmosphere, but he still never looks phased.
Sir Alex Ferguson has lauded him as a future Scholes and that compliment doesn’t come lightly. He certainly is a star in the making.
