PICTURE: Ferguson at Nou Camp watching El Clasico

by Sam Peoples

Sir Alex Ferguson, Mike Phelan and Rene Meulensteen were all at the Nou Camp tonight to watch Real Madrid  take on Barcelona ahead of Tuesday’s Champions League showdown.

Watching from the stands, they saw Real Madrid tear Barcelona apart in their own backyard with Ronaldo running the show – an ominous sign ahead of Ronaldo’s return to Old Trafford next week.

He was imperious all across the pitch and Real Madrid’s stunningly effective counter attack tore through the Barcelona defence. Ferocious pace, perfect passing and an unrelenting work rate were all on show from Ronaldo who simply terrorised the Barcelona defence.

One big question is whether Ferguson will give Nemanja Vidic a start on Tuesday night. He has been returning to his best in recent games and with three clean sheets in a row, United are the strongest they have been all season. But, given Vidic’s inherent lack of pace, would a combination of Ferdinand and Evans be more suited to the fixture? Nightmares of Fernando Torres in his prime striding away stay prominent in my mind.

Saying that, Ferdinand isn’t much faster so Ferguson may well choose to play his captain in what will be the most important game of the season so far. Given how impressive Real Madrid were tonight, he’ll have to lead by example if United are going to reach the quarter finals of the Champions League.
