“It is third time De Gea has won the Player of the Month award since joining the Reds at the beginning of the 2011/12 season. No other United player has won it more often in that period.” Manutd.com
He has cemented his place as the first choice goalkeeper with over ten consecutive appearances and kept three clean sheets in his last five games, including an outstanding performance away to Real Madrid in the Santiago Bernabeu that firmly put to bed even the most adament of De Gea critics.
With 57% of the fans vote, De Gea was by far and out the firm winner of February’s Player of the Month poll with Rafael (21%) his closest competitor and the Spaniard is delighted with the recognition he is getting.
“I think my favourite save from the last month was definitely the one with my left hand against Real Madrid, when I pushed Fabio Coentrao’s shot against a post.” David De Gea
Speaking to Manutd.com, De Gea said: “It’s very good to have the support of the fans, so I’m happy to win this award. I can hear the supporters during the games so I know they’re singing about me. I’m very grateful for that.”
Still only 22, he is starting to show the sort of form that you expect from world class goalkeepers and even the fiercest of critics are eating their hats.
“I think we’ve been very good in defence as a whole and have been keeping some clean sheets,” De Gea continued.
Manchester United are now in their best defensive shape they have been all season with Vidic, Rafael, Ferdinand, Evans and Evra all on top form, and going into the most difficult part of the season that couldn’t of been better timed.
It was never going to be easy for De Gea to replace Edwin van der Sar but less than two years into his United career, he has transformed himself into the outright number one.
De Gea is no longer the skinny framed boy that arrived from Atletico Madrid and is looking every part like the world class goalkeeper we all knew he was. Well done Dave.
