PICTURE: Jaap Stam signs contract to become Ajax assistant coach in July

Jaap Stam will take on the role of Ajax assistant coach in July 2013 after putting pen to paper on a three year contract.

The 40-year-old finished his career at Ajax having made 31 appearances for the Dutch outfit before hanging up his playing boots in 2007.

Despite only making 80 appearances for Manchester United, Stam is rightly regarded as one of the best defenders to have ever played at Old Trafford. There aren’t many players who have carried such a daunting physical presence on the pitch as Stam did and he was one of our backbones in the 1998/9 treble winning season – his debut campaign.

Stam has previously admitted that he wants to manage in the Premier League in the future and this is certainly a great stepping stone for him. He will work alongside Edwin van der Sar at Ajax as he is their Marketing Director.

I certainly wouldn’t want to be on the wrong end of Stam’s team talks. Good luck to him.
