Speaking at the pre match press conference this afternoon ahead of tomorrow’s Premier League clash with Reading at Old Trafford, Sir Alex Ferguson has confirmed the latest team news.
Sir Alex on latest team news…
Nani is injured and will be out for two weeks. Ferguson said it is “nothing serious” and that he hopes to have him back for Sunderland at the end of March. Phil Jones is also still sidelined.
“The players have done well in training this week and hopefully we’ll be okay tomorrow. Jones should start training next week.”
Sir Alex on Reading…
“Reading are fighting for their lives at the bottom and could come here without a manager. Some things you can never understand and football is full of that and to sack Brian McDermott at this stage is strange to say the least.”
Sir Alex on Ferdinand call up to England…
“[Rio] has to make sure he’s going to be okay in terms of the number of games he plays. We’ve been doing that for two years with him. And it’s worked. The way we’ve detailed his training programmes and given him the treatments he needs for the various complaints he has in terms of his back and groin and things like that. So far it’s worked very well. We have to look at all these things before Rio decides.”
Sir Alex on Benitez handshake…
“I was waiting at the beginning. It’s up to him, I was in the way waiting.
“Ask him – if you are brave enough, ask him. It was his decision. I was ready and waiting. I have some education because I know a lot of people are watching so I know what I have to do.
“It is nonsense. Why would I refuse to shake his hand?
“I was signing autographs and I never saw him. Why he has said that I have no idea. If he wanted to shake hands he could have stood straight in front of me.
“It is absolute nonsense.”
