PICTURE: Nani gets a red card but Benzema gets nothing

by Sam Peoples

nani-martinez-tackleIf consistency is the key to refereeing, then Karim Benzema should have been sent off for Real Madrid in their UEFA Champions League quarter-final against Galatasaray tonight.

If it is intent Nani was sent off for, Benzema followed the ball the whole way and knew what he was doing.

If it a high foot Nani was sent off for, Benzema’s foot was at head height.

If it is dangerous play that Nani was sent off for, Benzema is guilty once again.

The referee did nothing and gave a throw in and didn’t even show Benzema a yellow card. It isn’t the first time since Nani’s dismissal against Real Madrid that there has been clear discrepancies with UEFA’s refereeing consistency.

Javi Martinez should have been sent off too for his high footed tackle against Tomasz Rosicky during Bayern Munich’s clash with Arsenal.

The crux of the matter is that the Benzema and Martinez decisions were not wrong – Cakir’s decision to send off Nani was. Seeing repeated incidents of players getting nothing for similar tackles is proof of that.

It was a grave moment of injustice and the aftershock of it is still rumbling through the United squad. Since then, we have struggled to Sunderland and Reading and thrown away the FA Cup with two poor performances against Chelsea. It’s hard not to feel done by.

The foul on Rosicky was enough for Red Card

The only argument in Benzema case that we have been hearing is one that Nani had both feet off the ground flying and Benzema had one.

Besides, consistency in referees decisions is one matter that cannot be resolved i guess, there are thousand types of fouls, UEFA may have to sit and consider every kind of bookable offense, they might have done that on the “dangerous” ones,

In the end, it is always the referee to decide on the spot that changes the game, UEFA may hand afterwards but that matters less as the taste of the game is ruined there and then during the game

It was a clear scam from the moment the draw took place, never in a million years could the same teams be picked against each other twice in 24hrs, and even before the Nani incident Cuntey Cakir (excuse my terrible spelling) was blatantly throwing the match, it would be interesting to see if he ever refs a France match, but then again I’m sure there’s someone at the top that can fix that too. And UEFA have the brass neck to ban Italian teams for corruption?

uefa and fifa are against english teams doing well in elite competitions, anybody who knows football can see this. the referees performance against a english team is a joke and they well know they will get away with it. I also include the euros and the world cup and you will all see something similar happen sometime soon. its a joke and i think the english fa are a joke too. something needs to done as this will continue this is fixed

why were english referees not appointed in the 1/4 final round of matches? this shows why english clubs are suffering. in 2009 it was chelsea; in 2010 it was arsenal; in 2013 it is man utd & arsenal. the excitement in the UCL is gradually dropping.

The best protest from EPL, is to pull out of uefa and this campaign should take its centre stage by the English press. Why on earth is uefa cheating on clubs where they make the most profit? When was the last time their supported league, host the final of champions league? Fact; within 4yrs, wembly have hosted the final plus this year edition. Pull of Epl, and uefa is financially meltdown. EPL values more than Ecl, in terms of monetary value.

This year the same Plattini said he wld love to see Madrid n Barcelona in this years final, my quetion is, which country is Madrid n Barcelona from? Manchester United out of Uefa champions league was aplaned thing, Plattini knws evrythng about Man Utd being out at this point!

UEFA are cheats – Theres nothing more to it. What makes it worse is United didnt even appeal that decision and UEFA just ignored it because they know it was an incorrect decision. I really hope none of these cheating Spanish teams win the champions league , its always controversy in their progression in the champions league a real shame!

Gary…..you’re the Turkish ref aren’t you…or Roy Keane’s mum? 😀

And what we actually deserve is a place in the last 8 (quarter finals) as the whole nation alluded to in the aftermath of this latest example of refereeing incompetence. Obviously you have had time to put your underachieving and bitter hat back on since our nation collectively mourned this latest example of UEFA inspired injustice.

Its an open secret that UEFA already hv the teams they wnt to b in e final. They manipulate decisions thru refrees. If a team or coach show their disappointmnt in them they fine. Its a way of sain even if we are wrong no 1 tells us what to do. I wonder Y sep blatter is ìn office. All this is happening under his belt. ”Mr Blatter u’re there to make sure u execute justìce in futbol” and u got power to reverse any injustice.

eWhat a load of rubbish from the referees ad UEFA! At least be man enough to admit to their mistakes instead of hiding behind their almighty veil of authority! And worst, if they discrimate clubs like MU for beìng successful, they can like what they did in Nani’s red card! How can Benzeama not be sent off similarly?!! I would like to see UEFA responding to this!!

UEFA are manipulating their desired outcome through these refereeing decisions, remember Chelsea vs Barcelona a couple of years ago where Barca went through despite much controversy and was eventually the Champions. Platini is a bloody joke he doesn’t fancy the English game so don’t expect UEFA to be fair.

The whole thing about uefa is a deadly **** and cheat. Look at this; a ref from the country manchester united played against its team at the group stage. Why today’s ref was from norway? Why not from one of the countries Madrid played against at the group stage? Why is Barcelona, for the past 3 seasons getting first away fixture from the knock out stage? To get away goal rule in their favour. Three spanish teams at the quater final, yet they are not being pits against each other. The way forward, the other european leagues that are been cheated should find a way of pulling out of uefa, and form their own foofball association.

First of all….how many times am I going to see the verb ‘to have’ written out of the English language – especially on football websites? It is not “should of” laddie…”should have”! “Should have been sent off”!
There are further frustrations….for example “gave a throw on” should of course be “gave a throw
-in”, “…didn’t even brandish Benzema a yellow card” is very colourful in it’s rhetoric…but of course should either be “didn’t even show” or simply “didn’t even brandish a yellow card”. I’ll stop there out of compassion but I totally agree with the substance of your complaint.

We were robbed of the clear opportunity to progress and come up against a relatively week Galatasaray side in the quarter finals. Robbed by a referee already embroiled in controversy for decisions made in previous games he’d taken charge of, a referee of no real pedigree – not a person anyone would have expected or wanted to take charge of such a game – and a referee who seemed to be a bit of a Real Madrid fan, as revealed after further ‘inspection’ by the English media.

Red4Evra put me in my place anyway, but I do hope a sense of humour shone through in my original reply 🙂

By the way…I’ve been complaining that Evra should be ‘moved on’ for the last 3 years. Seems like every period of defensive frailty stems from gaping holes on the left side of our defense, left (excuse the pun) by Patrice’s reluctance,or inability, to marshal his vertically challenged frame into some semblance of ‘left fullback’ solidity!

There Red4Evra…that sealed my fate didn’t it? 😀

Er …..bloody spell check – and then lack of it 😀 … but happily you enjoyed the grammar tutorial.

Difference here, as opposed to grammar, is that I am not changing the structure of a language. I quite simply accepted my software as able to alert me to any spelling mistakes… and it worked 😀 ….and if I said to you that by ‘week’ team I actually meant the team that played the weekday games as opposed to that which played weekends….you couldn’t really argue….could you? 😀 😀
