PICTURE: Nani gets a red card but Benzema gets nothing

by Sam Peoples

nani-martinez-tackleIf consistency is the key to refereeing, then Karim Benzema should have been sent off for Real Madrid in their UEFA Champions League quarter-final against Galatasaray tonight.

If it is intent Nani was sent off for, Benzema followed the ball the whole way and knew what he was doing.

If it a high foot Nani was sent off for, Benzema’s foot was at head height.

If it is dangerous play that Nani was sent off for, Benzema is guilty once again.

The referee did nothing and gave a throw in and didn’t even show Benzema a yellow card. It isn’t the first time since Nani’s dismissal against Real Madrid that there has been clear discrepancies with UEFA’s refereeing consistency.

Javi Martinez should have been sent off too for his high footed tackle against Tomasz Rosicky during Bayern Munich’s clash with Arsenal.

The crux of the matter is that the Benzema and Martinez decisions were not wrong – Cakir’s decision to send off Nani was. Seeing repeated incidents of players getting nothing for similar tackles is proof of that.

It was a grave moment of injustice and the aftershock of it is still rumbling through the United squad. Since then, we have struggled to Sunderland and Reading and thrown away the FA Cup with two poor performances against Chelsea. It’s hard not to feel done by.
