Rio Ferdinand has insisted that Manchester United’s prerogative is still to win the Barclays Premier League and their priority is to reclaim their crown – not to break Chelsea’s record points haul.
United have already broken one record this season having become the first team in the top flight since the Premier League began to win 25 of their first 3o games, and look on schedule to overtake Chelsea’s point record along the way.
Chelsea’s record haul of 95 points from the 2004/5 season is within reach with United currently sitting on 77 points with a possible 24 points still up for grabs.
But Ferdinand has only got his sight set on one goal.
“We are not any more hungry because of what happened last season [loosing the title on goal difference].
“This is just the way we are. The mentality of this club, driven by the manager, is that you have to win and you have to be challenging for every single competition you go in for.
“That has been the case since I have been here and will never change. This club, the manager, the management team he has behind him, and the players and the fans demand that.”
Ferdinand has been in superb form this season, the best we have seen from the veteran in many years, after great management of his injuries by the player and the club.
He has played a big part in United keeping six clean sheets in a row helping them on their way to a 15 point lead at the top of the table and if he is fit, it wouldn’t surprise me to see him start against Manchester City tonight in the derby.
