Phil Jones‘ performance was the highlight of the derby for me. In his favoured centre-back position, Jones was fantastic. He was rightly singled out by Gary Neville in the post-match analysis because, apart from being partly to blame for Aguero’s goal, he didn’t put a foot wrong.
And his face for Aguero’s goal almost made it worth conceding the winning goal for. He somehow always manages to look like he is being electrocuted. When is 50 Shades of Phil Jones‘ face going to be released?
Facial expressions aside, you can really see why he is touted as a future England captain. His committed tackling, intelligent positioning and no nonsense style kept Manchester City at bay until a deflected Milner shot gave them the lead. You could see Jones shouting at club captain Evra, a man ten years his senior, to tell him to cover the first man for a throw on. It is the minor details that make it obvious he is captain material.
A natural leader and centre-back, you could see he enjoyed playing at the heart of defence. If Evans or Vidic was fit, he would of probably played in the middle alongside Carrick (and United certainly needed his energy there) but he took his opportunity tonight with both hands. Well done Phil.
