PICTURE: Phil Jones literally sweats blood for Manchester United

by Sam Peoples

jones-blood-arsenalEven if this picture of Phil Jones sweating blood ¬†after Manchester United’s 1-1 draw with Arsenal is photoshopped, there couldn’t be an image that embodies his attitude to football better.

Once again, the ever versatile Jones was moved into central midfield as Ferguson wanted to use his energy to try and limit space for Arsenal in the midfield – and his performance was outstanding.

Tough tackles, boundless energy and a burning desire to win despite already wrapping up the Premier League title were all on display.

Jones is almost like a puppy playing fetch, never wanting to give the ball away when he does have it and always chasing the ball when he doesn’t.

His display saw him voted man-of-the-match in The Peoples Person’s player ratings.

Ever the versatile man, Jones even played right-back after Rafael was substituted late in the second half and looked like he had played there all game.

Comparisons to Duncan Edwards and Franco Baresi might have been very early in his career but comparisons to greats don’t happen very often. This season, Jones has shown why Ferguson was so eager to snap him up and if the Scot feels that he can become one of Manchester United’s greatest players, I believe him.
