Keane’s fantastic year continues with player of the year nomination

Manchester United’s Michael Keane has come runner up in Leicester City’s Player of the Year award as voted for by the fans.

The 20-year-old centre back came in joint second with Peter Schmeichel’s son Kasper behind club captain Wes Morgan.

It caps what has been a fantastic season for Keane who made his senior appearances against Newcastle, Chelsea and Braga this season still aged just 20 and continues from last year where he was named United’s Reserves Player of the Year .

Keane, whose twin brother Will is set to be fit for the start of the 2013/14 campaign after missing all of this season due to a knee injury, joined Leicester City on loan in late 2012 and has gone on to make 24 appearances scoring two goals along the way including a late equaliser against Leeds.

The centre back has earned rave reviews from the Leicester faithful and his frequent defensive partner Wes Morgan has been quick to praise the England U21 international.

He said: “To come here from Manchester United reserves, where he played mainly with lads his own age, to step into the Championship where you play week in week out and its hustle and bustle where there is no respite and lots of experienced players, he has done remarkably well.

“I have been so impressed with him. He will definitely be a star of the future, if that is at Manchester United or another big club, who knows.”

High praise indeed.

It’s great to see Keane excelling on loan at Leicester who are fighting for a spot in the Championship play-offs. The influence of a positive loan spell on a young player can’t be underestimated and when Keane returns to Old Trafford in the summer, he will be hungry for more.

When we had an injury crisis this year, he showed his worth by stepping in and with Ferdinand and Vidic coming towards the twilight of their careers, Keane can certainly lay claim to a place in the senior squad if he continues to progress at the speed he has in the past two years.
