“David de Gea wants me at Manchester United? All players want the best players in their team. I could say I hope that he comes to Barca in the same way he says things about me” Thiago Alcantara
Barcelona midfielder Thiago Alcantara has remained coy over his future amid reports linking him to a move this summer to Manchester United.
The 22-year-old is rated extremely highly at Barcelona but after failing to appear for more than 30 minutes in 60% of the Catalan outfits game this season, the release clause inserted into his contract has reportedly fallen from €90 million to just €18 million, sparking rumours a move abroad.
But Thiago refused to comment on the murmerings until after Spain’s participation in the U21 European Championship this summer.
“I just live my life and I am very happy,” Thiago said.
“I enjoy it in Barcelona because I have lived through some great times but we will see what happens after the Euros.
“Any player is used to living with rumours about him and they just cannot affect you.”
And it seems that David de Gea is nudging Thiago in the right direction after claiming he would like him to come to Old Trafford, but the midfielder didn’t see much in the comments.
“David de Gea wants me at Manchester United? All players want the best players in their team. I could say I hope that he comes to Barca in the same way he says things about me,” he added.
“I just think he was having a bit of fun and not too much should be read into it.”
The midfielder, seen as the long-term replacement for Xavi Hernandez, has struggled for first team action and he is keen to get as much game time as possible to push his ambitions of starring for Spain at the 2014 World Cup in Brazil.
A need for reinforcements in United’s midfield has led to persistent links to Kevin Strootman, Cesc Fabregas and Marouane Fellaini but if news of a relatively small release clause is true, Thiago’s arrival could provide great value in the market.
Thiago has been used predominantly from the bench by coach Tito Vilanova but as a talented and ambitious player, he obviously has aspirations of making a more lasting impact that can’t be fulfilled as a substitute so a move abroad may be the only option.
