Shinji Kagawa gets a fond farewell

by Sam Peoples

Shinji Kagawa may have only had one season at Manchester United under the guidance of Sir Alex Ferguson but it is one he will cherish forever.

The 24-year-old playmaker admitted that getting a farewell from Ferguson personally was something that he will remember for a lifetime.

Speaking to Japanese media outlet Soccer KingKagawa gave a lovely insight into how he dealt with Ferguson’s departure.

“After the last match I was called by him and he said to me again ‘I really thank you for coming [to Manchester United],” Kagawa said to Soccer King.

“At that time Sir Alex talked about his reasons for retiring and said ‘You’ll definitely become better next season, I definitely believe in that.’ Being able to talk to him one-on-one was a really big event for me.”

It’s typical of Ferguson’s nature to add a real personal touch to his departure, even with his newest players, such was the relationship he had with his squad. A father figure right up until the last.

Out of all the players in the current squad, the potential of Kagawa next season is probably the one that excites the fans the most and I certainly agree with Ferguson that he will get better next season.

His return in his debut season was admirable with six goals and three assists in 20 appearances but with a full summer ahead, Kagawa should be fighting fit come the start of the 2013/14 Premier League campaign.

Kagawa is going to have an extremely busy two months as Japan have World Cup qualifiers to play followed by this year’s Confederations Cup before joining United’s pre-season tour.

While such a busy summer is bad for some players, it should help Kagawa really find his fitness and there is already a real buzz as to what the Japanese playmaker can do next year as the era of Moyes Boyes begins.
