United’s cup final with City confirmed for August

by Sam Peoples

Manchester United’s U21s will play Manchester City on August 6 for the Lancashire Senior Cup at The County Ground, the club has confirmed.

Five pre-season matches have been scheduled for our U21s with the last game against City wrapping up the fixtures for the current U21 Premier League champions in the summer.

Last year, United ran out 4-0 winners against Accrington Stanley but as is always the case with Manchester derbies at any level, it will likely be a fiercely contested match.

It is going to be a busy summer for Warren Joyce and his squad and with the likes of Thorpe, Keane, Cole and Henriquez competing in the U20 World Cup until July 13, it will give Joyce an opportunity to utilise his whole squad and bring some of the promising U18s into the squad.

United will also pay a visit to Waterford United in Ireland and face up against Nick Powell‘s old team in Crewe Alexandra, a fixture I’m sure he will be relishing so long as he recovers from his surgery in time.

Here is the pre-season list in full for the U21s:

18/07/2013: Waterford United (a)
20/07/2013: Ross County (a)
29/07/2013: Crewe Alexandra (a)
30/07/2013: Skelmersdale United (a)
06/08/2013: Manchester City (n)

City have been playing an U19 side in most reserve and U21 comps last season. It will be interesting to see what the two new regimes will do, I doubt either will want to lose and for the players of both sides it’s an opportunity to make a case for their futures at their respective clubs.
