Robin van Persie has turned down multiple major commercial deals in order to concentrate on staying fully fit for Manchester United next season.

The 29-year-old dominated the UK shirt sales with over 25% of all shirts sold being emblazoned with his name but despite his new found marketability, van Persie is refusing to let it get in the way of his career.

“I have discovered that I have now reached a new stage of my career,” van Persie explained.

“I have just spent almost two weeks in Asia with the Holland national team and I have been absolutely amazed by the level of my own popularity over there. I have been getting some incredible commercial offers, but I have decided to skip them all.

“I looked at my schedule of travelling and the amount of matches I have to play and decided my football and my fitness comes first, not money. After the Asia tour with Holland, I will have to travel again to Asia and Australia with Manchester United next month.

“In between, big companies wanted me to spend more time in Thailand, Malaysia, China and a few more countries.”

Van Persie could of secured lucrative seven figure commercial deals but instead of putting money first, he decided to pass on them all in order to give himself the best chance at maintaining his fitness in 2013/14.

It’s fantastic for United that van Persie has decided to do that and it is proof that the Dutchman is not driven by money.

Arsenal fans, particularly Piers Morgan, labelled van Persie as a money grabber when he secured his move to Old Trafford last year but a money grabber would not turn down big money commercial deals to keep himself in shape for the football season would he?

“The opportunities for me were incredible. But I feel I need every moment to rest so I can peak again as a player in the new season,” van Persie continued.

“I do admit that I gave it a bit of thought for a moment, but when I saw the schedule for the next few months and new season, ending with the World Cup, I decided to skip all the commercial avenues.’’

With each passing month, van Persie further endears himself to the United faithful. His professionalism, attitude and class as a United player is phenomenal.

He has coped magnificently with the torrid abuse from Arsenal fans and shrugged it off on the way to securing his first Premier League medal.

The biggest concern for United fans was van Persie’s inherent injury problems but through good management, he spent barely any time at all on the treatment table last year.

Van Persie clearly intends to repeat the feat this season and it’s great to see a player turn down money in order to better their footballing career.

Alas, players like Van Der Sar and Van Persie – why didn’t SAF buy them earlier? Sigh… Both have become MU legends even though they joined so late in their careers. Hope Moyes will work to bring in a few more ‘Vans’ earlier in their careers.

Arsenal fans resort to the false claims of money grabber to hise the fact that they don’t challenge for trophies anymore. He’s a classy guy and moved for trophies not money, otherwise he would have accepted citehs offer.
