“I believe with David and his new team in place, along with our current backroom staff, we can now start preparing for the new season ahead. This is an exciting and challenging time for the club and I have great belief that David and his team will have all the energy and attributes needed to help this club continue in its long-standing traditions.” Ed Woodward, Manchester United executive vice chairman
Manchester United have officially confirmed the appointments of Steve Round as assistant manager, Jimmy Lumsden as first-team coach and Chris Woods as goalkeeping coach.
Round worked under Moyes since 2008 whilst Lumsden and Woods have both been part of his Everton coaching staff since he joined in 2002.
And speaking about the appointments to Manutd.com, Moyes is confident that he has brought in the right men to get the job done at Old Trafford.
“I have worked with Steve, Chris and Jimmy for a number of years and I am delighted they have decided to join me at this great club,” he said.
“They bring great qualities in their respective fields and I know that, like me, they feel that this is a challenge to relish.
“I have great faith that together, we can build upon the success this club has enjoyed over many years.”
The appointment completes the transition of Sir Alex Ferguson and his back room trio of Phelan, Steele and Meulensteen who have now all left the club.
While it is sad to see the back room staff completely change, it was inevitable following Ferguson’s departure. Moyes needs to work in an environment where he is as comfortable as possible to get the best out of him and having trusted staff working alongside him will help in that respect.
One questionable area is that Woods is also the goalkeeping coach for the USA national team. To me, that is a clash of interest given how big the role will be at a club like United.
But Moyes know his staff better than anyone else and he feels they are good enough to handle the pressures of Old Trafford.
Work will begin immediately for the staff with United players expected back at training soon ahead of the 2013 pre-season tour which kicks off on July 13 in Bangkok.
