Ezequiel Garay takes one step closer to Manchester United move

I believe in my own ability and I am ready for everything, even to replace Garay.” Lisandro Lopez

Benfica’s new defensive signing Lisandro Lopez has dropped a big hint that Ezequiel Garay will be leaving Benfica this summer.

The 23-year-old centre-back, who arrived in a reported €4 million deal from Argentine outfit Arsenal, is being lined up as a probable replacement for Garay if he leaves.

And it is something that Lopez insists he is ready to do.

“I believe in my own ability and I am ready for everything, even to replace Garay,” said Lopez.

“I spent three wonderful years at Arsenal, I take with me very positive things.

“Now I am going to have the chance to improve my career in a European league, and that is going to give me much more experience and the chance to be recalled to the national team.

“I am just 23 years old and everything has happened very fast to me. I have to be calm and keep my feet on the ground.”

Ezequiel Garay has already signed for Manchester United earlier this summer if the Portuguese newspapers are to believed, although there has been no official movement from either club as of yet.

But Benfica is well accustomed to selling its star players with the likes of Axel Witsel, Javi Garcia and Fabio Coentrao all leaving the Stadium of Light in the past few years.

And Garay may well be the next to leave, especially considering he joined up with super agent Jorge Mendes this year. Only last week, reports surfaced that the 26-year-old was house hunting in the north of England.

But it would seem a strange move if United brought in another centre back given that Vidic, Ferdinand, Evans, Jones and Smalling are already on the books with more pressing issues apparent in the squad.
