Ryan Giggs takes up new dual role at Manchester United

Ryan Giggs will be take up a new role as player-coach next season with Manchester United.

The 39-year-old will work alongside Phil Neville and Jimmy Lumsden as first team coaches under David Moyes.

Giggs has been working on attaining his UEFA Pro Licence out at the U20 World Cup this summer and is expecting to gain his badges next year.

Speaking on his new dual role at the club, Giggs said:

“It’s a great privilege to be appointed a player/coach. I hope I will be able to bring my experience to bear, having been both a player and part of the Manchester United family for so long.

“It’s no secret that I have been taking my qualifications and I see this as the first step in my future career. I’m really looking forward to working alongside David and the team.”

The changes following Sir Alex Ferguson’s departure were inevitable but I am thrilled to see our ex-players coming into coaching roles.

Neville and Giggs have had fantastic successes at the club and teaching that sort of mentality from within should have a great effect on the players as well as Moyes, who will now have a solid team of experienced United heads working with him.

“I’m delighted that Ryan has accepted the chance to become player/coach,” he said on Giggs’ appointment.

“His success and ability to adapt his game over a number of years gives him an unrivalled perspective on the modern game. His career is an example to any aspiring young player and I’m sure that both he and the players will benefit from his new role.”

There is no reason why I can’t see Giggs as United manager at some point in the future. His career is one that will not be repeated on the pitch and he would command the utmost respect from any player who he managed.

Going into next year was always going to be a bit of a mystery but the appointments made by Moyes, especially this Giggs one, has given me some real confidence that we are going to be in good shape.
