Ronaldo really does want to come home to Manchester United

Cristiano Ronaldo has hinted at a possible future exit from Real Madrid as speculation continues to grow as to whether he will return to Old Trafford or not.

On Tuesday, the Portuguese international was in Singapore to attend the Singapore Olympic Foundation/Peter Lim Scholarship event at Crest Secondary School.

After showing off his ball skills and posing for photos, Ronaldo held a brief Q&A session and when asked if he missed English football, he said:

“I do, I really miss it. Those were some of the best years I had playing for Manchester United.

“It will always have a special place in my heart. I’m very happy in Spain right now, but you never know about the future.”

Ronaldo’s attempt to sit on the fence has only made it more confusing as to where he will end up plying his trade next season – especially after his Twitter comments a few weeks ago where he declared the news about his contract renewal was nonsense.

The former United winger did say that he thought his current team were ‘the best in the world’ and that he was happy to stay at Madrid but when it comes to Ronaldo, what he says and feels are something altogether different.

“Let’s see, but he will probably remain there. If he leaves, Real Madrid are finished.” Jorge Mendes, Ronaldo’s agent

Former Manchester United assistant manager Mike Phelan did nothing to dispel the theories of Ronaldo’s return in an interview with BBC Radio 5 Live on Sunday.

Phelan openly answered every question he was asked, until the final question where he could only say ‘no comment’ when asked whether Sir Alex Ferguson had left a deal on the table for Ronaldo to return.

The signs are there that the return of Ronaldo to Old Trafford could be possible and with no clear denial as of yet from Ronaldo, there is certainly a possibility we will see one of United’s most famous sons back in a red shirt.

But this isn’t the first time that Ronaldo has publicly admitted he misses United as Scott over at The Republik of Mancunia points out here:

14 February 2010: “Of course I miss playing for Manchester United. I played there for six years and that’s a long time. I am still interested in watching Manchester United and, you never know, maybe in the future I could return to play there. It’s always possible.

“I want to fulfil my contract here but, in the future, only God knows. I will not say I am not happy here at Real Madrid. I am really happy and everyone knows this is my club but, of course, I miss Manchester United, the boss, the players, because I left family there.”

14 November 2010: “To be honest I miss the Premier League a lot. Of course I have good memories about Manchester. I have good friends there and I miss them a lot, so you never know.”

6 September 2011: “I don’t close the door, so maybe in the future I hope so, because I know the league, I know the players, I know the atmosphere. Why not? I hope so one day, but you never know.”

18 May 2012: “The future? Nobody knows. But I feel very happy here. It’s a great club, fantastic fans… it’s great. In one year or two you never know. A man’s head is always complicated.”

It is hard not to get excited at the thought of a Ronaldo return but given how ambiguous his quotes are, it is hard to determine anything from but with not long left on his contract, Ronaldo will really have to consider whether Madrid is the place he wants to be or whether he wants to come home, where he belongs.
