Captain Marvel has a different view on Manchester United’s midfield

by Sam Peoples

Manchester United legend Bryan Robson has insisted that the weakness at the club does not lye in the central midfield position.

The midfield has long been considered to be underwhelming against tough opposition and with Paul Scholes retiring, now seems to be the correct time to seize the opportunity in the transfer market to buy a commanding figure to play in the heart of the midfield.

But Robson, who offered his input to the situation during the Reds partnership announcement with Aeroflot as the the new team carrier, believes that buying one individual should not be the priority.

“I know with the Manchester United fans, they are used to having a really dominant central midfield player. Like Keaney, Incey, myself and then Scholesy,” he said.

“But I think what the fans have got to look at is: Is the balance of the squad pretty good anyway without having that type of player in? You’ve got to say ‘yes’ as we won the title by 11 points.”

“Now, of course you always want to improve but you’ve got to look at the balance of Antonio Valencia, Ashley Young, Tom Cleverley, Michael Carrick, Ando [Anderson] and the rest. They are still very, very good players but you’ve got to look at the balance and is that right, rather than go out and try to get an individual who you must rely on all the time.

Thiago’s potential signing was lauded as the missing link to our midfield. He may not have been a physical powerhouse but his creative play going forward would have allowed Carrick to sit deeper and control the tempo of the game.

But Robson is convinced that the balance of the squad is good enough as it is.

He continued: “So my message to Manchester United fans is don’t be too influenced by this talk that we need this midfield player because I think the boys can cope.”

“I think you’ve got to ask David Moyes what he thinks about where the squad maybe needs tweaking. One thing he’s done great, so far, for United fans is no-one has gone out of the door.”

“If you look at the squad we’ve got at this moment in time, it’s a healthy squad with a great chance of retaining the championship next year.”

Sir Alex Ferguson had previously last bought a central midfielder in 2007 and with Fletcher’s illness, Scholes’ retirement, Powell’s lack of experience combined with Anderson and Cleverley’s potential being questioned, now seems to be the correct time to fill the gaping hole left alongside Michael Carrick.

David Moyes’ position in the hotseat would get off to a healthy start with the fans should he buy a marquee signing such as Kevin Strootman or Thiago Alcantara, who have been heavily linked with a move to Old Trafford in recent months.

Providing re-assurance to fans, a move would solve any short-term concerns that this title winning side face in their defence for the title and quest for success in Europe.

As for the long-term, a central midfielder to reach the heights that the likes of Roy Keane and Paul Scholes in their prime once reached would be the first masterstroke of genius from David Moyes.

United Surely need 2 Solid Midfielders-
Thiago and Fellaini are a Powerhouse.
We can Train Valencia or Best, Rafael to Play Defending Midfield. Sell Nani, Anderson, Evra,
Fletcher, Macheda and Welbeck for Nicolas(Benfica),a Hot Winger , Thiago and Fellaini 2 Solid Midfielders, Then 2 Solid Defenders, Baines and Ezequiel(Benfica).
This Current Squad is Weak, Full of Wonnabies. We need to build a Strong United to Dominate not only Premiership, League Cup and F/A,
But Europe.
My Best Selection for United.
1. David De Gea-Goalkeeper.
2.Rafael/Valera-Right full-back.
3.Baines-Left full-back.
Central Defender.
6.Thiago-Attacking Midfielder.
8.Fellaini/Carrick-Defending Midfielder.
7.Zaha/Valencia-Right Winger.
11.Nicolas/Young-Left Winger.
10.Van Persie-Forward.
Then Europe, Premiership, F/A and League Cup, United’s Footstool.
United forever!

You have left out a great player Shinji Kagawa.

Kagawa is not a Dangerous player Like Hazard.. He’s yet to prove Himself. Paul Pogba is causing waves at Juventus. We need a strong United Force.

l couldn’t disagree more with Robson on this. Tom Cleverley is good, but potential to be very good. Anderson is very good when he gets a string of games going, but then gets injured, because of his troubling fitness. Both Ashley Young and Valencia were both dreadful last year and Nani most likely will leave. (so another winger might not be a bad idea, unless they both improve majorly, from hopefully the conpetition of Zaha) Giggs is on his last year and hopefully will do really well as a coach, Scholes has retired and Fletcher is undergoing surgery. 2 centre midfielders are definitely a must imo, if we have any chance in the PL, other cups and in Europe. I just hope Moyes realises that’s what we need and then we will have a better chance. Nonetheless im looking forward to Moyes first game in charge. 🙂 I hope we will see Januzaj, Lingard, Zaha and Welbeck put in some good performances from the younger side of the team, during the tour. 🙂 P.S Rooney with his damn injury. 🙁
