United DID try to sign Thiago but he explains why he chose Bayern Munich

by Sam Peoples

Manchester United did make an offer to buy Thiago Alcantara from Barcelona according to Mediapro president Jaume Roures.

“There were offers to sign Thiago from Manchester United, a Spanish team and the one from Bayern,” he told RAC1.

The Sunday Times’ Duncan Castles claimed that United were never in contact with Barcelona to discuss a potential transfer fee, although Roures’ claims that United did in fact table an offer suggests otherwise. It would have been a worrying situation had we not been interested in a talented, available player like Thiago given our need for someone like him.

Thiago’s move to Bayern Munich from Barcelona was always going to happen after Pep Guardiola’s publicly singled him out as the only player he wanted to sign this summer.

The 22-year-old midfielder was heavily linked with a move to United and on paper, it looked like it would suit both parties but United stood little chance after Guardiola’s Munich came into the picture.

And in his first interview as a Munich player, Thiago proclaimed he was “very, very happy” at the move and unsurprisingly cited Guardiola as the major factor behind his move to Germany.

“We’ve known for a long time that he is a coach that gives me confidence,” he said.

“I am a big fan of the style that he plays football. There are very few in the world with his technical capabilities. It was certainly a major reason to come to Munich.”

United looked red hot favourites to land Thiago for a couple of weeks. His desire for first team football matched our desperate need for an inventive midfielder but it was a move that was dead in the water as soon as Guardiola stepped in.

The 22-year-old certainly can’t be begrudged for wanting to play under the manager who gave him his debut for Barcelona B and the senior side but it hurts to miss out on another talented midfielder.

United’s silent approach to this Thiago transfer was questioned by some but in reality, if we had done everything in our power to land him it still would have been futile because of Guardiola.

Good luck to Thiago at Bayern but for United, it is onto the next one and that seems to be Cesc Fabregas given reports of a €30 million bid today.

Well I can’t see him getting more game time at Munich and I certainly don’t see Ze Germans starting to play tik tak football since both german clubs kicked spanish butt good and solid in champs league, confed cup also proved that spanish style flaky football is on a short leash and their days are numbered. There are loadsa top talent out there that I believe man u can sign, not to mention an already good team of players we already have. Good luck I say to Thiago, I do hope for his sake that the promise of more game time at Munich is not limitted to minimum minutes only but actual games as he will be seen as another Rooney, back up benchwarmer! LoL !

thiago should have stayed at barca lol, Bayern have a much better midfield so goodluck with that one thiago!

man utd should have moved much quicker aswel but he is always likely to back to barca when they came calling so im glad we didn’t get him!

at man utd players become stars all over the world! players really are dumb. we win trophy after trophy and will continue to do so.

champions league last year we got very unlucky by a bias referee but overall in the last 5 years we have been the best team in Europe behind barca who by the way are finished nut I fell blessed to have witnessed that team.

spain wont win the world cup also. it will be Germany Brazil or Argentina.

remember where u heard it first!

we should buy gyuduan from dortmand and stop playing games! and strootman! come on moyes are u blind??

mufc they always score!

Hi Samp. Where exactly did I say that ‘United were never in for the midfielder’? What I wrote was that ‘According to senior sources at Barcelona, at no point were United in contact to discuss a transfer fee, nor to signal their intention to activate Thiago’s release clause.’
That does not exclude contact with Thiago’s representatives, but it does exclude an offer to Barcelona, and, as some reported, an agreed deal.

You’re quite right Duncan and I have changed it accordingly. Would be a big worry if United had no made no attempts whatsoever to try and sign him though.

Thiago played with Man U and kept the fans and club waiting so he can gets others clubs prowling so that he can choose the club he really wanted to go to BAYERN!
Bayern ain’t got no space for him lol. He was better of at Man U atleast he would of got more games.

But then again he was better off staying at Barca because he is in the same situation now.

Barca are saying that united made NO contact, neither club mentioned it, seems all media stuff. United never made a bid.

A bid is hardly ever confirmed/denied by a club.

United tried to sign me too. Honest, but I refused and played for Didsbury United instead. You’d believe anything anyone says.

I would never wish Thiago the “cunt” all the best at Bayern, after he toyed and used Man Utd to seal a move to Guardiola’s side. I sincerly hope he ‘rots’ in Munich each and every week on the bench, while the likes of Gotze, Gustov, Ribery, Sweinstiger and Shaqari etc start all the games! Bastard.
