Chelsea officially confirm Rooney bid but deny Mata/Luiz deal

by Sam Peoples

Chelsea have released an official statement confirming their bid for Wayne Rooney but have denied that any player was offered as part of the deal.

Reports suggested that Chelsea had offered £10 million plus Juan Mata or David Luiz in a player plus cash deal for Rooney but Chelsea have categorically denied that.

The official statement from the club said: “Chelsea can confirm that yesterday it made a written offer to Manchester United for the transfer of Wayne Rooney.

“Although the terms of the offer are confidential, for the avoidance of doubt and contrary to what is apparently being briefed to press in Sydney, the proposed purchase price does not include the transfer or loan of any player from Chelsea to Manchester United.”

This summer was always going to be about Rooney after he went home before playing a game on our pre-season tour but I didn’t expect a media war so early on.

It is clear that somewhere along the line, be it from United themselves or the media, there has been some Chinese whispering going on. I thought the Mata offer was too good to be true (as much as I wanted it to be) and it is.

You get the feeling that this saga is going to supersede those of Sneijder, Thiago et al from the past. It’s going to be a long summer for Rooney and United.
