Jose Mourinho has revealed that Wayne Rooney is Chelsea’s only transfer target this summer according to Sky Sports News and that Chelsea will not submit an improved offer for Rooney.
Bayern Munich manager Pep Guardiola used a similar approach regarding Thiago Alcantara and he ended up securing his signature. Although the circumstances are different, it it something that will polish Rooney’s ego.
When questioned about the Rooney bid out in Bangkok, Mourinho said he saw no issues with how Chelsea have conducted their business so far.
“We did what we have to do in a proper way, in an ethic way,” he said.
“We feel very happy with our behaviour because it was clean.”
The latest comments from Mourinho follow his admittance that Rooney is a player he ‘likes very much’ as the Chelsea manager continues to tap up a player under contract at another club, something he doesn’t do according to his own words.
“It’s a tricky question because I cannot speak about players from other teams,” he proclaimed.
“But you know me, it’s not my kind of character to speak with a bit of hypocrisy and I always say what I think.
“He is a player I like very much but I can say no more than that. Being fast and direct, I like that, but he’s a Manchester United player.”
Chelsea were always going to be in the market for a striker this season but after the likes of Edison Cavani and Falcao have joined PSG and Monaco respectively, Mourinho has set his sights on Rooney.
United’s chief executive Ed Woodward has flown back from Australia to conduct ‘urgent transfer business’ and Rooney is likely to be at the top of his priority list.
