Gonzalo Higuain has revealed that Jose Mourinho wants to sign him for Chelsea despite his claims that Wayne Rooney is his only transfer target this summer.
The 25-year-old Argentinian striker told Spain’s AS that the Chelsea boss is keen to bring him to Stamford Bridge and Napoli’s president Aurelio De Laurentiis also confirmed that Chelsea were in for Higuain.
“Mourinho wants me there [Chelsea],” Higuain said.
When asked yesterday by journalists if it was a case of signing Rooney or nobody, Mourinho insisted that Rooney was Chelsea’s only transfer target this summer but that is not the case as Chelsea are in for Madrid’s Higuain.
Mourinho continued his tapping up of Rooney today but given that he is looking elsewhere for strikers, Chelsea’s approach of Rooney may simply be nothing more than a smokescreen.
Rooney is clearly unhappy with his current position at United and while that is obvious, The Mirror’s David McDonnell believes that United will not let Rooney go at any cost.
The board will not want to let Rooney go because of his commercial value on the global market and, under the Glazers, that will have a massive bearing on whether he is allowed to leave the club.
All Rooney wants is first team football and if he pulls his socks up, he will be in David Moyes’ first XI every single week.
Plus, the fact that Mourinho has lied to Rooney through the media by claiming he is his only target this summer isn’t a move that is likely to entice Rooney to Stamford Bridge.
