Gary Neville calls for a different approach to United’s midfield signing

by Sam Peoples

Manchester United’s pursuit of a midfield signing is one that has so far seen the club linked with Thiago Alcantara, Cesc Fabregas, Marouane Fellaini, Yohann Cabaye and Ilkay Gundogan, to name a few.

It is an ongoing saga that will likely last for the whole summer as David Moyes looks to bring in a midfielder to strengthen his squad.

Everybody has their own opinion on what Moyes should do but when Gary Neville speaks, people listen.

The pundit has quickly become one of the most respected voices in football and he has given his own view on United’s pursuit of a midfielder.

As usual, Neville speaks some sense. With so many midfielders being thrown into the hat, it wouldn’t be logical for United to simply buy for the sake of it if we miss out on our top transfer target which is looking increasingly like Cesc Fabregas.

But I can’t agree with Neville that if we miss out on him that we should stick with our current crop of midfielders. Not even Gary can make me believe that we have enough quality to challenge on all fronts.

For the past few seasons, United have come up drastically short when it comes to competing against powerful midfield’s. The likes of City’s Yaya Toure and West Ham’s Mohammed Diame easily overpowered us in the middle of the park and it makes it difficult for the defence to link up with the attack.

Moyes’ Everton exploited those holes at Goodison Park and although Jones being deployed to man mark Fellaini stopped that from happening in the return fixture, it is an area he knows is weak.

As it stands, our talks with Fabregas are ongoing but if we aren’t successful, United still need to sign a suitable partner for Michael Carrick. If Fabregas isn’t that man, then it doesn’t mean that someone like Marouane Fellaini wouldn’t improve the squad.

The Columbian midfield Quintera? One of the best in the world for his age (20) was on the market for 5mil. Euros. But United don’t want to pay that much, they will wait a couple of years until he has established himself then pay 20 Mil.
Why do United always go for players they have to pay top dollar for every time.

Good point Trevor, What would United have had to pay for Chicarito Hernandez now, if they had not moved for him when they did, one of Manchester United;s most loyal honest underrated players we have. the premier leagues most
prolific goal scorer versus time on the pitch.
A player that even if we had thought not reached the level he
has United could have moved him on without losing anything,

I have a different theory to the normal thiago fabregas ones.

I think we were in for fab from the start, and he also wants to come! However I think Barca playing hardball involved them offering thiago instead.

Now thiago is out of the question it’s all now down to fab to force the move. Hence the delay.

Don’t listen to a thing the clubs, players and papers alike are saying. As u know its never the truth.

We wait for actual news.

Its shameful. Soon we will be hearing Fletcher is like a new signing and Anderson has lost 3 stone which makes him the new Makelele. Lets get Gundogan/Felanni and Modric and stop messing around.

Roger 07/28/2013 - 00:09

Spot on. So let’s forget that Fletcher is a player that barely has not only played but not even trained, for two years – he’s the £35m reinforcement we’ve craved for since Keane left. Anderson… We will be reminded of that genious pass to Zaha in the CL match against Ozaka that proves he’s the playmaker to replace Scholes. All worries about his fitness will vanish. At least until october… And yes, while I’m at it; of course Moyes will fix Nani’s incosistency and Rooney’s moodyness.

be serious, we need quality in midfield, something we do not have, so its 3rd or 4th in the prem and out of the champions league by Xmas?

has anyone mentioned Bastien Schweinstiger, of Bayern, Munich forgive the spelling!

this is someone who’s experience can take us to the next level, can Moyes see the woods for the trees?

Roger 07/27/2013 - 23:43

Schweinsteiger is worth a thought. Thiagos prefered position is the same as Schweinsteigers, so it might be a possibility. Other options to consider is Gundogan (to much like Kagawa?) or Modric. Also; what about Schneiderlin (spell… the So’ton cm) and Lars Bender two players who might be a perfect fit with Carrick. If we’d go for any of these instead of Cesc Fabregas we could afford a powerhouse as well; Fellaini, Diame or Wanyama?
To secure that youngsters get a chance we simply must offload some dead wood – even if it mean we’d have to let go on free transfers just to get off the pay roll and to free up space in the squad.

Moyes doesn’t seem to have a stand in the transfer market,Fabregas is a no no….Barca wouldn’t sell two talented CM in one window.why not try Gundogan,or Marchiso?..we need 4 signings, bale to replace Nani,2 CMs and one defender,u all saw smalling.even jones isn’t mature enough for what coming our way this season.

So…. I see a lot of people asking for only names that we are linked with in the papers. There are millions of young talents out there, why not start buying them up instead of trying to buy them when they have a huge price tag on their head. Romain Alessandrini, Juan Fernando Quintero and Luis Muriel, just to name a few.
As for big name signings Chelsea, Madrid and now Munich have twice as many players in that position now. Test the waters with non English teams (S. Khedira, T. Kroos etc).
If we are to sell Rooney to Chelsea, make sure it’s a straight swap for J Mata.
My choice of signing would be Hernanes Lazio, great with both feet, a dead ball specialist and a long shot specialist, again using either foot.
Evra still has a good year or two left at Man Utd, so a left back and there is better than Baines out there.
A 27 year old centre back with experience would be a welcomed addition to the squad with Vidic and Ferdinand coming to the end of their careers.
And finally we should do everything in our power to sign Gareth Bale this season. With him and Zaha ( great potential there) we could have a great counter attacking side once again

I don’t agree with that!! Our midfielders are very poor! Wingers hardly contribute to the game, kagawa is a very good player he just hasn’t been given a chance to play in his proffered position, Carrick is also a good player but not great at getting forward with pace. We need another midfielder and better wingers. Yes I agree the youngsters we have are great but do not have experience!! We can’t expect to win champions leagues with 18 yr old I’m midfield

Two midfielders he could buy is Ozil and Khedira from Real Madrid who look they may be surplus to requirements.

I just can not believe since the end of last season Moyes and Woodward have known United had to strengthen in midfield yet they are still in the same position.
Either these two are in over their heads and do not know how to run a big club.
Any manager worth his salt would have a number of possibilities he would love to sign. But it seems that Moyes only has one
Moyes has had over two months to organise someone to bring in yet we are still in the same boat as we were atthe end of last season.

You all are jess talkin bout buying.have you 4gotten we nid 2 balance d books.we need 2 sell some crap.Nani,Evra,Anderson,Macheda,Bebe,Valencia or Ashley Young, maybe Vidic and even Fletcher & Welbeck. Yea we need a CM but we also need 2 give the younger ones a chance. Januzaj might jess be great 4 us. We can’t get Fabregas obviously so we should go 4 other great guys. I absolutely want to see Liverpool’s Coutinho at Manutd. He is young and great.

Its plain to see my fellow mancs have no champions league ambitions, fergies record in the competition wasent worth talking about, weve dominated the premiership & not signing a quality midfielder (which weve needed for 5 years) doesnt mean we wil relinquish our title so easily but confirms we are no longer part of europes elite!

I’m afraid the man utd of today is not the manutd who dominated English football for so many years. Rooney wants out moyes and Woodward saying things they think we want to hear it’s about time utd get real we need players of utd standard not giggs and Scholes I’m sorry but they’ve been great but times have changed its faster passing football now…
Moyes needs to stop this bullshit and be honest he’s fergys puppet and fergys was glazers no money to spend glazers have raped us we won by default last season. We won’t get so many helping hands next….

Ed, the other clubs have strenghtened their teams whilst we haven’t. We’ve lost Scholes and again seem to rely on Giggs as CM. Yes we won the PL last term, but if we don’t strenghten in those weak areas (cm, left back) and sort out others (wings and central defence), we won’t come even close this season. Why? City and Chelsea have sorted weak areas by spending and are aware of the need for steadiness. Even Spurs, Arsenal (if the sign Suarez) and Liverpool could match us if we continue to stick in the past.

Totally agree.what also seems to be a problem regarding transfers is our negotiating team.ed Woodward has no footballing business background, just a glazer bean counter and yes man who won’t ruffle 2many feathers.

Ed- I agree.. Everyone’s spending money to improve because they weren’t good enough last year!! United were good enough it’s a young midfield with experience and league winners medals. Kagawa Carrick Zaha Valencia – id take that all day long!! ..if they remain fit united retain league. We need a powerhouse midfielder not a creator!! We need to find a new Keane!!

If the midfield is so dreadful and in need of upgrading how did United win the league and nearly knock Madrid out of the champions league? I

Are you for real Ed, first off we did catch a bad break against Real but we would have been murdered in the next round.
And as far as the league goes we were consistent, but that’s because both City, and Chelsea were going through there own strife to really compete, management issues and all that. Trust me when I say we will not be getting any quarter from them this year.

If Gary is saying stick with what we have got if we don’t sign Cesc. I fear gloom and doom.
The last two matches Utd. Have played without Carrick have been a midfield disaster. With everybody raving about Lingard who at the best is below average for the Premier League. Moyes should have taken Petrucci Powell and Vermilj instead of Fabio Keane and Lindgard.
I think Moyes is heading down the slippery slope if he does not sign two midfielders.
I also think Moyes is looking to play Giggs regular. Because he has started three out of four games on tour and if this is the case goodbye Champions League next season

Personally the hollywood targets are just to keep the fans n media “interested”…I would have thought that looking at Gundagon n De Rossi who combined would be roughly the same as Cesc would make alot more sense!!!…

Moyes wouldn’t be going after a top midfielder if we didn’t need one. There’s still time, however Neville is right who in their right mind goes for ‘two’ of Barca’s top players. Is there another team out there that has sold two top midfielders this summmer or any summer???. Cesc was a poorly thought out target full stop. Barca would almost be committing hari kari to move on two top midfielders in the same window… There are still a lot of top midfielders out there, just try anyone who hasn’t already sold a top midfielder..

If Phil listen to much to his big brother, it might happen (that we don’t buy) because Moyes will trust him and Giggs a lot when it comes to analyzing the squad. Bit afraid that Moyes also will be more worried about defenders than midfielders after some horrifying play in pre season. If not at least one top class cm is signed we’ll have to fight for third. At best. Not because our team has got worse but because City and Chelsea will be better.

So you think Fabregas will be able to stop City’s Yaya Toure and West Ham’s Mohammed Diame or even Fellaini from overpowering our midfield? obviously it is a weak point for United, but not the issue Moyes is trying to cope with at the moment.

Well said. All i have learned from this summer is that whatever the press reports is probably hot air. I dont know if we can land cesc. I sure would love to see him paired with carrick. But if not there are other top shelf players available. Fellaini for 22 mil is a no brainer purchase as i would argue he is an extremely underrated player. Marchisio and cabaye are both excellent players and would certainly add to the side. I want to defend cleverlys over hits, andersons over weight, and giggs over age. But lets be honest. This is the premier league and it is hard nosed footie all year long. Cleverly anderson and giggsy are nice options for FA cup and some early champions league games and 70th minute subs. But in order to win the league they need an upgrade in midfield. Citizens, gunners, spurs, blues….all spending big to knock us off our perch. New coach. Lots of youth. Lots of question marks. If they fall asleep they might find themselves in a dogfight for top 4. Let alone defending their title. Come on executives!! Open that check book

Have a lot ov respect for gary nev, just cant see how he thinks we’d cope with what we have without strengthening. Giggs is goin on 40, cleverley no better than average n Anderson is just not utd quality. Serious injury to Carrick n we’re up shit creak.the young kids have cracking potential but it would be unfair to heap so much pressure on them to perform. Throw in our dodgy wingers from last season , doesnt inspire a lot of confidence. That’s why moyes needs to wise up what we really need n not just go for a Hollywood signing.
