Borussia Dortmund coach Jurgen Klopp has admitted defeat in a failed attempt to re-sign Shinji Kagawa.
The Japanese playmaker joined Manchester United last summer ending a successful two year spell in Germany with Dortmund where he won the league in both seasons.
After the departure of Mario Gotze, Dortmund are in the market for a playmaker and Klopp revealed that he tried to persuade Kagawa to come back to the Signal Iduna Park but was rebuffed in his advances.
“It was clear relatively quickly, Shinji wants to prevail this year at Manchester United,” Klopp said.
“I did not expect a different answer, you just have to ask even once.”
Kagawa endured a frustratingly slow start to the campaign in his debut season thanks to an injury that kept him sidelined for three months from October but it clearly hasn’t stopped his ambition to succeed at Old Trafford.
Fans were given glimpses of his talent when he returned in the latter stages of the season but he admitted he was disappointed with his first year at the club.
After a great summer away on international duty with Japan, Kagawa shone on United’s pre-season tour of Asia. He will come into the new season fully fit and if he can replicate that sort of form regularly, he can become one of United’s most important players this season.
