Manchester United release Cesc Fabregas statement

Cesc Fabregas today confirmed that he has no intention of leaving Barcelona for Manchester United this year after weeks of speculation linking him to Old Trafford.

And in response to his public statement, a spokesperson for Manchester United has released one from the club.

“We appreciate Cesc is a contracted player at Barcelona, and completely respect everything Cesc has said today,” the statement read.

For a lot of reasons, this statement is extremely odd. Why is there a need for us to release one at all? We may have had two bids rejected for Fabregas but our affiliation with him goes no further, so for us to release a statement respecting Cesc’s decision is strange.

And the tone of the statement isn’t very defeatist. It almost sounds as if the club are still going to go ahead with a third offer despite Fabregas saying that he is happy at the club and has no intention of going anywhere.

Our public courtship of Fabregas has been a drastic transformation from our usually quiet, covert transfer dealings and this statement indicates that it may be a trend that is set to continue.

I’m not sure what fans would make of United’s board if we were to go in with another offer for Fabregas after his statement today. It was always a long shot trying to lure him from the Nou Camp but it looks dead in the water after Fabregas’ pledge to Barcelona.
