Guillermo Varela made his debut for Manchester United tonight in a 4-2 victory over Ramsbottom in a pre-season friendly.
The 20-year-old right-back is the club’s only signing so far in this window having joined from Uruguayan outfit Penarol.
Varela enjoyed a productive summer on international duty with Uruguay’s U20s where he earned a runners-up medal in the U20 World Cup in Turkey, narrowly losing to Paul Pogba’s France on penalties. Despite not starting the final, he played every game leading up to it and showcased his exciting natural attacking style of play combined with some good discipline.
He has been linked with a loan move away to Boca Juniors with both the player and his agent confirming their interest in the move. Argentinian football would certainly be a great learning curve for Varela and it would allow him to gain precious first team experience.
Marnick Vermijl has been very consistent with the reserves for the past couple of years and many United fans would rather see him given the chance at being backup to Rafael but Varela may well remain at the club this year.
Varela’s style is reminiscent of a younger Rafael and if he can progress at the same speed that the young Brazilian did, United could have another marauding South American right-back on their hands.
