Danny Welbeck makes the headlines

Five Manchester United players made it through England’s 3-2 victory over Scotland without injury and there were some big positives to take from the friendly.

Obviously, Wayne Rooney stole the headlines before kick-off but as anticipated, he was rusty. It is to be expected of a player who has struggled with two injuries and no actual game time this pre-season. There were a couple of glimpses of Rooney but it was an indifferent performance that was littered with poor first touches and some arm flapping.

Danny Welbeck’s performance was the polar opposite. He was rightfully named man of the match after a great 90 minutes that will not only fill United fans with confidence but will give him the self belief he needs to succeed this season. Danny was one of our bright sparks on the pre-season tour and he continued his form tonight with a well taken headed equaliser for England.

Welbeck showcased his typical magic feet with light touches and delicate passes throughout and going into the new season, it looks like he is ready to storm the league. Zup zup.

Tom Cleverley also put in a good shift for Hodgson’s side tonight. His personal highlight was a beautifully weighted pass that set Walcott up for England’s opener. Playing in a midfield three, Cleverley enjoyed the one touch passing when England executed it well but his touch was left lacking a few times. It would be harsh to be too critical though because, overall, he played well before being replaced by Milner.

Wilfried Zaha and Phil Jones both had cameo appearances late in the game. Unfortunately for Zaha, he couldn’t replicate his devastating pre-season form tonight but I can’t wait to see how he copes with the Premier League. Jones replaced Jagielka at the heart of England’s defence but basically had nothing to do as England had all the forward momentum.
