Michael Carrick pulls out of England squad

Manchester United’s Michael Carrick has pulled out of tonight’s England squad to face Scotland in a friendly at Wembley with an eye infection.

The 32-year-old was expected to start for Roy Hodgson tonight but he will now take no part in what is going to be quite an intense friendly given the history of the fixture.

A statement from the FA said: “Carrick, who has been capped 29 times by England, has returned to his club and misses the game on Wednesday evening.”

It’s good news for United fans because the season starts against Swansea in three days and the last thing we needed was an injury to Carrick. There is no confirmation that he will be fit to play on Saturday but given that it is just an eye infection, it would be a surprise if he was sidelined because of it.
