Jose Mourinho has completely backtracked on his claims that Wayne Rooney was Chelsea’s only transfer target this summer amid reports of a third bid for Rooney.
United have had a very unwavering public stance that Rooney isn’t for sale at any price but despite that, Mourinho is expected to come back with another improved offer and although he stipulated that Chelsea were only interested in bringing Rooney in, he has confirmed that the London club has other options if a deal fails to materialise.
“We have a plan B and a plan C!,” he said.
“Don’t ask me names, because it’s difficult to speak about players from other clubs.”
Want-away Rooney would have been wooed by Mourinho saying he was his sole transfer target but Mourinho admitting that Chelsea have other plans should a deal not happen suggests that was all just to try and make Rooney feel more wanted.
We all know that Mourinho is a connoisseur of mind games and his unsettling of Rooney by publicly discussing him throughout the summer has no doubt had an effect on his mindset.
And with Chelsea paying a visit to Old Trafford on Monday, expect there to be even more talk linking Rooney with a move to Stamford Bridge. I wouldn’t put it past Mourinho submitting a bid on Sunday night for maximum disruption.
