Robert Martinez has slammed Manchester United’s double bid for Marouane Fellaini and Leighton Baines as ‘a waste of time’ after a £28 million bid was rejected out of hand.
United fans expected David Moyes to make a move for his old players given how well they played under him at Everton but Martinez has said that he has no intention of getting involved in the transfer window now that the season has started.
Speaking about United’s double bid for Fellaini and Baines, Martinez said: “It has been well documented what happened with the transfer speculation.
“That’s been dealt with and it was all a little bit of a waste of time. Time I don’t want the players to waste.
“I think the situation is very clear. I think as a football club we will always keep our fans informed.
“I’m not a big believer in having the window open while the games are starting, I think the start of the season was important for us at Norwich and I won’t come out now and carry on talking about the speculation.
“When there is something to tell our fans we will do that, they will be the first ones to know when there are players coming in or going out but I don’t believe in getting involved in the transfer window after the season has started.”
Martinez’s statement does not at any point allude to the fact that Fellaini and Baines are not for sale. Much like Everton’s statement yesterday, his words sound like nothing more than a ploy to try and get as much money as possible for the duo rather than a firm standpoint that they are not for sale at any price.
If Moyes were to go back with an offer of £35 million for the pair, Everton would likely change their stance and given their proven Premier League quality, it would be a fair price to pay for two players who would improve United’s squad.
