Manchester United have been drawn against Shakhtar Donetsk, Bayer Leverkusen and Real Sociedad in Group A of the 2013/14 UEFA Champions League.
The draw was not as favourable to United as it has been in the past two years but given the teams that we could of been drawn against, it is a good group that we have been placed in.
Shakhtar Donetsk have never played United and have a fantastic home record but have sold some of their best players with Fernandinho and Willian leaving the club this summer, so it is a good time to play the Ukrainian outfit.
Bayer Leverkusen last played United in 2003 when we beat them both home and away in the Champions League group stages and they were certainly a better draw than Borussia Dortmund.
Real Sociedad completes United’s Champions League group this year and it will be the Spanish sides first venture into Europe’s elite competition, so David Moyes won’t be the only rookie in the group.
This will be Moyes’ first footsteps into the Champions League group stages and he has already admitted he will call upon the knowledge of Ryan Giggs to help him through the competition.
Moyes should be happy with the draw that United have been given. It will be a testing group to get through but United have the quality to come out on top.
United will begin their Champions League campaign on 17/18 September and the full fixtures list will be released later tonight.
