Nick Powell tipped to take the Championship by storm

Nick Powell completed a deadline day loan move to Championship side Wigan Athletic and he has been tipped to continue his fine progress in English football.

The 19-year-old spent one season at Old Trafford but will now move down to the Championship with Owen Coyle’s Wigan in order to gain some valuable first team minutes.

And speaking to the official Wigan Athletic website, Coyle admitted he was delighted to have brought Powell to Wigan.

He said: “We’re delighted to welcome Nick to Wigan Athletic, and thank Manchester United for allowing a player whom they have invested a large sum of money in and has incredible talent, to join us for the season.

“We’re all excited to be offering him the opportunity to play football at a high level and for him to continue his development here at the club.”

Powell becomes the fifth United player to spend a loan spell at Wigan following in the footsteps of Angelo Henriquez, Tom Cleverley, Michael Clegg and Keith Gillespie.

Whenever Powell played for Warren Joyce’s U21s last season, he stood head and shoulders above all the players on the pitch. He was simply too good for football at that level so a move to Wigan, who should be challenging for promotion, is a great stepping stone in his career.

Touted by Sir Alex Ferguson as a potential Paul Scholes replacement, a lot is expected of Powell but given the growth he has shown in the last 12 months already, there is nothing to suggest he can’t fulfil the belief Ferguson had in him.
