Nani reveals why he didn’t leave Manchester United

Nani signed a new five year contract with Manchester United this week and speaking to the Daily Mirror, he has revealed that a long chat with David Moyes helped him make his mind up.

The 26-year-old was strongly linked with a move away from Old Trafford after a slow 2012/13 campaign but Moyes convinced him that, despite not being able to guarantee him a place in the XI, Nani should stay at United.

“I am very content with my new deal at Manchester United,” Nani said.

“This summer was not easy but after a lot of thought and talking to David Moyes I believe it was the best solution.

“I feel I can offer many things to United. I had other important offers but without a sufficent challenge to make me want to leave United.

“The coach would not guarantee me a place in the XI more than any other player. I know I must work hard to get into this team.

“That is my objective for this season.”

Fans have pointed towards United’s failures in the transfer market this summer but it can’t be underestimated how well Moyes has done in keeping players at the club.

Nani and Rooney looked like they were heading for the exit door at the start of the window but both are still United players and it is a testament to Moyes. Neither player lit up the league in 2012/13 but they have been integral parts to United’s success over the past six years, so keeping them at the club was just as important as bringing new players in.

The fact that Nani has secured a new five year deal despite having such a poor year is an indication of just how much he is valued by the club. Now that Nani has secured his long term future, it is time for him to show why he deserved a new long term contract and he could be in line for a start against Crystal Palace this Saturday.
