Wilfried Zaha has been named on a five man shortlist for the 2013 Golden Boy award given to Europe’s most promising player under the age of 21.
He has been named alongside Schalke’s Julian Draxler, Juventus’ Paul Pogba, Real Madrid’s Raphael Varane and Liverpool’s Philippe Coutinho.
The Golden Boy award was created back in 2003 and it is voted for by sports journalists from across Europe. Previous winners include 2012’s Golden Boy Isco and the likes of Lionel Messi, Wayne Rooney and Anderson (yes, Anderson).
It is a testament to how influential Zaha was in Crystal Palace’s promotion last season that he is named on the list alongside three youngsters who were plying their trade in the Champions League last year.
While he is unlikely to win the award given the competition he is up against, Zaha will take great pride in just being named on the shortlist.
Zaha is yet to feature for Manchester United under David Moyes in the Premier League but with a visit from his old club Crystal Palace this Saturday, it could be the perfect chance for Zaha to make his debut for the club in the league.
