Manchester United have been given a big boost after Darren Fletcher joined up with the first team training for the first time since his surgery.
The 29-year-old’s ongoing battle with a chronic ulcerative colitis condition has affected his ability to play for the past few years and he had been sidelined since January following surgery to try and improve his condition, so it is fantastic to see him back in a training kit and smiling.
Fletcher has always been a fans’ favourite because of the no nonsense style of play that he adopted when he was an integral member of United’s first team.
It has been a terrible shame to see his career take a downward turn because of his battle with ulcerative colitis and following his surgery to try and contain the condition, many expected to never see him in a United shirt again.
But he is a fighter, a battler, and Fletcher has made his return to first team training yesterday.
For Fletcher, it is by no means the end of the road and he still has a long to go from here to try and rebuild his career but football aside, it is great to see that his personal health has improved dramatically.
Looking at the United squad, it would be great to have Fletcher back in as an alternative to Carrick. Moyes said that he hopes that United will play 60-70 games this season and if we are to compete on multiple fronts, having players like Fletcher in the squad will give us a depth that will allow us to rest our first team players in some games.
