Manchester United 2-1 Manchester City, 12 February 2011
Manchester derbies are always memorable occasions but there are certain goals and moments that will forever live on in the memory of every Manchester United fan. Wayne Rooney‘s overhead kick against City back in 2011 is one of them.
Nani’s goal had been scratched off by a deflected David Silva equaliser and in a tense game with little room for error, it looked like it could end as a stalemate. Rooney had other ideas.
Latching onto a scooped cross by Nani, Rooney flung himself acrobatically at the ball before rifling home a stunning overhead kick that sent Old Trafford absolutely wild. It was a goal that was good enough to settle any football match
“It is a special feeling scoring at Old Trafford,” Rooney said afterwards. “For the Manchester United fans, they deserved that.”
United drove towards the title after that goal and regained the Premier League with a nine point gap over City. After Rooney’s overhead, United never looked back.
