Manchester United were taught a lesson by Manchester City today. The 4-1 scoreline was completely deserved for what was a dominant performance from start to finish but as good as City’s players were, United’s away fans were absolutely fantastic.
After United went 4-0 down, the players heads dropped but instead of cowering into their shells, the United away fans sang their hearts out.
“20 times 20 times Man United, 20 times times I say, 20 times 20 times Man United, playing football the Busby way”
They belted that song out for a solid ten minutes at the top of their voices just after the hour mark. Despite being 4-0 down in the lion’s den, they didn’t stop singing. If only the players (other than Rooney) had shown that sort of passion on the pitch.
United fans are renowned for being loud and proud away from home but today was something else. To out sing your derby neighbours on their own turf when you are 4-0 down is brilliant.
It wasn’t long after their singing that United started to play after the introduction of Tom Cleverley that allowed us to finally get some possession of the ball and the fans would have played a big part in that.
Now is David Moyes’ biggest challenge so far from United. A win against Liverpool on Wednesday and the doom and gloom will subside. A loss? Plenty of fans will start to ask questions.
